Waata Taukamo was a son of Wi and Iritana Taukamo, of Kahukura, Waiapu, Gisborne, New Zealand. He was married to Kikiwai Taukamo. Before he joined the Army he worked as a labourer. On 16 july 1917 he left Wellington, New Zealand aboard a ship to Liverpool with the 19th Reinforcements, Maori Contingent. He arrived in Liverpool on 16 september 1917.
In the early mornin of 31st December 1917 he and some other soldiers of the Maori Pioneer Battalion were filling up holes in the Zonnebeekseweg at Ypres, Belgium under command of Lieutenant Joseph Paku, when a German artillery grenade exploded. Six of the men were killed instantly. The names of the other five casualties are: Rameka Taupaki, Raika Whakarongatai Murray, Benie Edmonds, Heremia Tawhero Haenga and Nehe Patara.

Waata Taukamo was killed on the Zonnebeekseweg, not far from the crossroad with the Jan Ypermanstraat.
