William Eric Mander was a son of William John and Mary Jane Mander, of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada. He was educated at West Hill High School and enlisted to the Royal Canadian Air Force in September 1940. Mander was the bomb aimer aboard Halifax MKII W1153 when it was shot down by Hauptmann Helmut Lent. The bomber crash landed in the North Sea northwest of Vlieland, The Netherlands. Three members of the crew of 7 were killed and the others were taken prioner by the Germans. The body of William Eric Mander was found at sea on 3 August 1942. Observer Penstone and Air gunner Baker are both buried in the Sage War Cemetery near Cloppenburg, Germany.
