John Jackson Low was a son of James and Margaret Low, of 3, Orrock Place, Jeanfield, Perth, Scotland.
Low was educated at Perth Academy and he studied Science at Edinburgh University from 1912 till he joined the army in 1915. He served with a gas section of the Royal Engineers, who were specialised in gascylinders. 
Lieutenant Low was awarded the Military Medal in july 1916 and the Military Cross on 4 october 1916. The citation for the Military Cross: "For conspicuous gallantry in action. When in command of special apparatus in the front trench, he displayed great coolness and determination under heavy shell fire and in most difficult circumstances."
Low's name in commemorated on a memorial panel in Mayfield North Church, Edinburgh.
