James Dempsey was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Dempsey, of Kirkcaldy, Fife. He was the wireless operator on board of Wellington IC R3202. The bomber crashed in the North Sea off the Island of Rottum at 0200hrs. None of the 6 men crew survived. The body of James Dempsey was found at sea on 23 August 1940. The bodies of Pilot Gerry, Pilot Pryor and Air gunner Wilde were also recovered. Gerry is buried in the Olderbroek General Cemetery, The Netherlands, Pryor is buried in the Uithuizen General Cemetery and Wilde also in Delfzijl. The bodies of the other 2 crew members were never found.
The Wellington bomber took off from RAF Marham, Norfolk at 21:24hrs. Their mission was to bomb an oil refinery in Hamburg.
