William Henry Curtis was a air gunner aboard Lancaster MK I (R5861). On 8 July 1942 the bomber was shot down by a German nightfighter flying from Leeuwarden airfield and crashed some 30 kilometers northwest of Ameland, The Netherlands. None of the 7 men crew survived. Sergeant Curtis' body was recovered from the sea near Delfzijl, The Netherlands. Only Curtis'  and sergeant Woolner's bodies were recovered. Sergeant Woolner is buried in the Sage War Cemetery, near Cloppenburg, Germany.
