James Courtney was on board of Stirling EF-263 on 19 september 1944. The plane left Fairford airfield for a resupply mission at Arnhem. After dropping its supplies near Arnhem the plane returned to base. It received a direct hit from flak and crashed at 'De Bleeke', east of the 'De Ruwenberg' seminary at Sint-Michielsgestel at about 17.30 hrs.The plane exploded on impact.
Crewmembers William Moss and George Wood were buried in Mierlo, together with air despatchers George Cadle and James Courtney. George Stanley Breckels, Stanley Coeshott, Stanley Davis and John Jeffery were buried in Sint-Michielsgestel
