The aircraft took off from Coningsby Airfield at 1701 hours on a mission to mark the Mitteland Canal for the following bombers of 5 Group to attack. Above De Rips the bomber was shot down by a Luftwaffe nightfighter and crashed at Gertruda Farm, the home of the Ypna family, killing seven of the crew of eight. The aircraft that shot it down was probably one of Nachtjagdgeschwader 4 or 2.
