On 8 november 1944, around 08.00 p.m., an universal carrier of the 1st Battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment, drove through Gastel, a small village near Budel and the Belgian border. It carried three men, Dennis Arthur Brierly, Joseph William Waterhouse and driver Sydney Stanley Joyce Webber. For some reason the carrier drove in to a ditch next to the Bergsestraat and exploded.  Apparently the carrier was loaded with munition and there was a lot of damage to the surrounding buildings. A farm and a barn burned down.
Brierly en Waterhouse died on the spot and Sydney Webber was seriously injured. He was taken to the hospital in Sterksel where he died the same day.
Ater the war Dorothy Thompson married James McDonough. She passed away in 2001. In 1990 she told her sons that she was married before and after she died, her sons wanted to know more about Dennis Brierly. On 7 may 2010 Richard and John McDonough visited Gastel and the memorial that was raised there, on the crossing of the Bergsestraat and De Dijk, on 8 november 1997.
