Petrus Antonius Marie Avontuur was born on 30 January 1920 in Princenhage, The Netherlands. He was a son of Johannes Avontuur and Francisca van Boxtel. When the Allies advanced through Northwest Europe he joined the Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten (Domestic or Home Forces, a coorporation of the largest Dutch armed resistance groups). In september 1944 the Regiment Stoottroepen (Shock Troops) was formed by Dutch prince Bernhard. Avontuur was a member of one of the shocktroops companies and on 23 January 1945 he was killed during fighting at or near Sint Philipsland, The Netherlands. There are different stories about the circumstances of his death. Some say he was killed after being taken prisoner and others that he was killed while on his way to a headquarters or when on the lookout.
