Stewart Alex Aitken was a son of James A. and Ellen S. Aitken, of Waikaka Valley, Southland, New Zealand.
Aitken served at Gallipoli and was awarded the Military Medal. His citation read: "Distinguished brave and valuable service as stretcher bearer on Gallipoli for six months. During August fighting worked devotedly and unceasingly in removing wounded under fire". 
Aitken was killed either near Mount Kemmel near Ypres, Belgium or at the Somme in Northern France, and he has no known grave and is commemorated at the Buttes New British Cemetery (N.Z.) Memorial, Polygon Wood.
